INDIVIDUAL SENTIMENTS AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 PREVIEW
INDIVIDUAL SENTIMENTS - AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 PREVIEW
There is one thing in life a gentleman simply cannot resist and thats a finely cut contemporary Japanese two piece. Individual Sentiments is a label that mixes a large dose of Japanese conceptualism with six tea spoons of precise Italian tailoring.
Bold silhouettes are complimented with a succinct approach to craftsmanship that is almost origami-like in nature. Born in 2009 by designer Yoko Ito. Yoko Ito’s work for individual sentiments originates in the rigorous fulfilment of a minimal precept that her clothes never deceive.
This strong stance forbids the designer to choose the easy way out and to push the boundaries of imagination. Cocking a snook at the world of fashion where the will to distinction is almost always the cunning of a generalised standardisation, Yoko Ito shifts the emphasis from the creation of a symbolic language to the materiality of the garment. She is aware that inventing a new world is a vain undertaking because the world as it is continues to pre-exist within our imagination and defeats it. Ito knows that in fashion when one aims for a fanciful novelty one often ends up in the much more mundane realm of advertisement. The individual sentiments carefully curated collections plainly belong to our world here and now.
Their singularity doesn’t stem from the cyclical temporality of fashion, nor from the calculated planning of the market. A meticulous selection of the quality of fabrics and high technical precision cuts are the two elements of the one gesture through which Yoko Ito gives life to her silhouettes, season after season. Each piece worth of the Individual sentiments title is designed and crafted in a co-existing organic relationship to the world surrounding them. They loom in the streets of the worlds most affluent capitals as urban and materialist epiphanies. They cover bodies with a timeless and modern attitude through which artifice becomes a second nature and transforms necessity in to a form of freedom, re-writing the definition of style.
Their latest collection continues this extraordinary journey as Yoko Ito glides along the twisting path of the future, picking up a collaboration with South-Tyrolian Designer Reinhard Plank and his progressive headwear ideals along the way. A label full of exceptional craftsmanship and attention to details with a longevity that is rarely seen in todays industry.
