INTRODUCING - M_1978

It is not often that we focus on a singular item, but the processes behind our latest label M_1978 left us with no choice. With meticulous planning and unrivalled attention to details we focus on the shoulder bag available to shop HERE

{ BRIEF HISTORY }

The brand Manucci 1978 was set up by the Artisan Master Mario. He later passed on his passion and experience to his son Marco and daughter Chiara, who decided to continue the family tradition in Perugia, in the heart of Italy. After specialising as a Designer at IED, Marco continues to strengthen the creative aspect of the label drawing inspiration on his own personal experiences, pursuing a project oriented towards experimentation that takes shape in jewellery and various accessories.

The M_1978 philosophy is to create collections based on ancient artisanal traditions, projecting them in a modern and topical context, with particular attention on the use of oxidised metals, vegetal fiber and old fabric. The combination of passion, creativity and experience, makes each piece unique and exclusive. M_1978 is a constantly evolving brand that focuses each detail on a tradition of "Made in Italy"

{ UPPER }

Consisting of a butter soft washed black horse leather trim and a hand dyed reclaimed 1940's hemp body the bag has a somewhat nostalgic aesthetic. Hand stitched with a two cord waxed tonal thread, this offers strength and stability, while also being less susceptible to the elements and deterioration.

{ TREATMENT }

Whether object or hand dyeing the item in question will at some point be soaked in a liquid / natural dye.

For object dyeing you immerse the complete object or chosen fabric in a container of dye letting it soak for a chosen duration to achieve a colouration as intense as you want. Once at this point the item is removed from the dye, rinsed in cold water until the water runs clear.

For hand dying you apply the paint / solution with a rag, rubbing the dye onto the upper until satisfied with the colour then leave to dry for 30 min. Once the item is dry put it in a bucket / container of cold water and let it soak for about 30 min to 1 hour or until excess dye has been removed. This process is also used on the leather trim and straps. Once the leather has been removed it is left to dry slowly, to prevent the leather from cracking. When the object or chosen fabrics are around 80% dry a water resistant treatment is used on the hemp to seal the fabric against the elements, while a leather conditioner is used for the same purposes giving butter soft finish upon fully drying.

{ HARDWARE }

All the hardware on the bag from the adjustable strap buckle to the double ring closure and zipper pull on the exterior pocket, has been meticulously hand cast, carved and hammered in a 925\000AG sterling silver. Each piece of hardware is finished with a natural oxidised patina (which can be achieved in a multitude of ways including sealing the metal in a bag with a boiled egg), offering a robust compound and longevity while evolving in appearance with wear and use over time. The hardware retains a roughness from it's origins in the sawing, hammering and forming of the metal leaving a harsh contrast to the supple soft fabrications.

Due to the extensive processes that each individual piece endures a timescale of 38 days is needed to hand craft the bag from start to finish. A true artisan piece with timeless aesthetic.
