NEXT - GENERATION
Wednesday; the centre of a classical five day working week. Crisp cornflower blue skies are disturbed only by the silhouette of the sun, the warmth of it's rays gently kissing all beneath. Regimental chimney stacks cast stark abstract shadows against the soft wave of tiles along the roof tops. Melancholic bird songs meander through the stillness as the wheels of time race round and round towards the finish line. As I type the endless ribbon of words, my mind wanders off to memories of yesteryear, flying kites, innocent, care free.
As I snap out of my current dream-state, I turn back to the reason I am sat at my desk tapping away at the battered keys of my keyboard. Five; the number of new discerning designers arriving at unconventional over the coming weeks. Below is an introduction to the designers and their craft alongside some imagery to whet your appetite.
Founded in 2012 by designer & multidisciplinary artist, Dar Smith, Breath & Stone is a unisex jewellery label specialising in handcrafted sculptural design and wearable art. Each individual piece is handmade or carved and carefully finished. Hand chosen in sacred pockets of the world, all materials are of the highest quality. Breath & Stone uses only certified conflict-free diamonds, which have been ethically sourced by the designer. A vision of military technology from the Viking age, ancient sorcery and foreign scripts combined with precious materials create the initial prototype, Eustace, that would define the entire collection and shape future product finishes. Each subsequent piece has been carefully designed to portray growing and developing organisms that have been plucked from otherworldly planets and used as weapons against unknown predators. The theory of hidden freedom and choice is relevant in the collection narrative. The following manifesto, written by the designer, is an indication of the direction of Breath & Stone.
Pixelated molecules as clear as a kaleidoscope They grow from silver, diamonds, me, you Anything can happen. They grow as we choose On a land mass far from what they call home Trees have never grown, water is extinct and the sun doesn’t shine It’s dark here. And cold. But we’ve never felt so alive
Breathe another chemical element, it’s beautiful We can’t cry but we can’t smile either. Maybe this doesn’t actually exist As we spawn; uncut, invisible We are free to decide Germ or Seed Open your eyes
LUDUS is an agender label that makes garments from natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen and up-cycled leather with minimum or no waste in the production cycle. Conceptually driven, Dragan Hristov (a contemporary art graduate at the Academy of Fine Arts - Brera in Milan) aims to dress the clients according to their momentary feelings. Based on emotions, often melancholic and sad, the collections walk the line between wearable and sleek avant-garde. The looks are mostly monochromatic and minimal and the silhouettes sculptural.
Inspired by film and contemporary music, Ludus' presentations are events set in unexpected locations contributing to the intellectual character of the label.
Ludus, -I (lat.) – play; game; trifle, jest joke
Ashleigh McCulloch founded her eponymous label in both Florence and South Africa, where they continue to handcraft contemporary jewellery for women. McCulloch applies traditional silversmith techniques to their craft, offering a slightly tribal based aesthetic which evokes a bold, raw, and emotive approach to jewellery design.
Inspired by natural elements and memories of travel, McCulloch’s collection of jewellery is informed by a deeply reflective and intimate energy. Thick metal lays a hard foundation for textured pieces that showcase a minimal, yet fluid aesthetic.
Refreshing, natural and expressive - this jewellery collection of powerfully built pieces for women represents McCulloch’s masterful ability to manipulate silver into textural anomalies for the human form.
Laurijarvinenstudio, a nordic minimalistic brand with a twist. The brands signature fuses avant-garde forms with sharp and flowing silhouettes. The gender free collections offer a forward thinking take on the androgynous movement which is complimented by locally sourced materials in a base black hue.
Ethical and ecological unisex clothing collides with minimalism to form a well balanced and versatile collection. Jewellery and small leather goods sit in juxtaposition to the free flowing garments and are all made by hand in the brand's Finnish atelier, using recycled leather from an old leather jacket or sofa.

Created in 2018 by Julien Leitan, a French self taught artist and designer, Beyond 11 Skins is a wearable art form of jewellery and accessories. From Modern Art to Tribalism, the concept of beauty can vary and be wired to our personal growth and evolution, Leitan believes in a sacred dimension when it comes to the ornament of the human body. Leitans' love for Design, Sculpture and many other types of Art is reflected within the pieces he creates. Sensitive to the structure of forms and their movements, they carry a concept of duality that creates balance. With the Skin of a human body acting as a canvas, a place where many stories can be told.
When inspiration meets the composition, a direction on form is given. Leitan aims to reflect that magical aspect in his work, where every single piece holds a story.
The name “Beyond 11 skins“ to go ( Beyond ) of the physical aspect ( Skins ) through a higher connection, the master number ( 11 ) reflects that connection.
