INTRODUCING - ROOTS - TWELVEPIECES
Amir Hassan is the founder and designer behind the young cultural brand, Twelvepieces, aiming to collide streetwear with polital awareness. Each collection's looks are built upon storytelling with a fresh take on iconic silhouettes, combined with minimalistic graphic elements. Amir, who was born and raised in Aarhus in Denmark and whose parents came from Egypt to Denmark as immigrants in the early 70’s, uses his family history as a source of inspiration to come up with collections that are not only aesthetically stimulating, but are making a strong political and social statement at the same time.
Twelvepieces release their new collection ‘Roots’ on December 12th 2017. The Danish brand continues their storytelling by taking us through the streets of Cairo, as seen through the innocent eyes of a child growing up in a peaceful Egypt. After an overwhelming debut with their first collection ‘The Spring’ 'Roots' drops on December 12th 2017 through at selected stores worldwide.
Their new collection ‘Roots’ is very limited and contains storytelling pieces about the cultural heritage of their head of design, Amir Hassan, and his childhood in Cairo, Egypt. The collection will still have the Arabic calligraphy with words like freedom, brotherhood etc, but unlike the rebellious values from their first collection, ‘Roots’ will also represent a more peaceful and beautiful side of Egypt, mainly inspired from when Amir Hassan was visiting his family for 2 months every year up until the revolution started in 2011.
“I think it is very important to represent and showcase both sides of Egypt. Though the country has been suffering from various dictators and corrupt politicians for years, I think it is important to stay positive and showcase Egypt and their culture on a larger scale than just my 24 years in this world.”
“For me the pyramids, sand dunes, camelbacks and hieroglyphs are among the things I find beautiful and inspiring. Not only does it represent a time when Egypt was a frontier for what would be a modern society, it also helps me visualise the culture and tell the story about Egypt and – of course – my Roots.”
Amir Hassan designs a combination of streetwear and traditional Egyptian wear. The collection contains 24 styles and 12 pieces of each style, every piece is numbered from 1 of 12 to 12 of 12. Featuring oversize pieces, from tee´s, hoodie, pants, skirts and an array of bomber jackets and coats that are complimented by a range of different headpieces and accessories. Every piece is a cut and sewn and made with exclusive materials such as 100% silk, cotton blends, nylon and leather. The visuals for the collection are part of a collaboration with the talented filmmaker Viktor Sloth, describing the mood, feelings and texture with sound, colour, noise and composition.
